Dhikr means to 'remember' in Arabic and also refers to a religious practice that is implemented by many to remember God. Dhikr is usually performed by jumping from one finger joint to another with the thumb while reciting spiritual chants or sayings.

The counting helps the worshiper keep track much like completing loops on prayer beads. While the individual is striving for closeness with God, I imagine beams of light emanating from their fingertips and illuminating the surrounding darkness. The open prayer space is constructed from a series of loops that represent the continuous chanting and completing of the prayers.
