QUAY
Pronounced ‘KEE:
Structure built parallel to the bank of a waterway for use as a landing place
Sweden welcomes approximately 100,000 refugees every year, far outperforming all the other Scandinavian countries combined. Quay is a mid-density, multi-family housing unit created to serve those communities. It acts as a soft-landing space for refugees arriving in Stockholm. People can temporarily live and work in a community that supports their unique needs.
Quay is comprised of:
• 5 Single-bedroom units
• 2 Two-debroom units
• 2 Three-bedroom units
• Shared multipurpose entertainment space
• Restaurant where residents can work while
they await appropriate job placement
• Offices for meetings with attornies, recruiters,
healthcare professionals, etc.
Inspiration was taken from nearby buildings to createcurved balconies and barrel vaulted ceilings with ten-cor steel cladding to protect from the coastal weather. Quay is constructed from prefabricated. Precast concrete and showcases shared plumbing walls. Lots of glass facades allow for more natural light and ventilation. The back courtyard includes pleasant outdoor seating as well as a communal garden. Tall aspen trees line the perimeter of the site to provide shade and greenery.
